FREE ONLINE TRAINING: Hazardous Materials & Railway Safety for EMS

Posted By: Breana Rinker WEMSA Updates,

The Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services Association (WEMSA) is proud to now offer a free, on-demand course for EMS and fire personnel across Wisconsin on hazardous materials response and railway incident safety. This course was developed with support from the Assistance for Local Emergency Response Training (ALERT) Grant, with the goal of strengthening response capabilities across rural and urban communities alike.

SPECIAL OFFER FOR EMS PROVIDERS:

The first 100 Wisconsin EMS providers (with an active EMS license through DHS) who complete the online course will receive a $25 gift card as a thank-you for their participation. Completion includes all content modules and a brief post-course quiz.
Why This Training Matters:

Each year, millions of tons of freight—much of it hazardous—is transported by rail through Wisconsin. These materials include:

  • Flammable liquids like ethanol and crude oil

  • Toxic inhalation hazards like chlorine and ammonia

  • Corrosives and reactive chemicals

In the event of a derailment, chemical spill, or railway incident, EMS providers are often the first on scene—but many are undertrained in hazmat-specific protocols. This course bridges that gap, delivering practical, EMS-focused hazmat instruction that complements fire-side training while addressing the unique responsibilities of EMS professionals.

This course was previously offered through in-person sessions held across the state and at the WEMSA Annual Conference. Now, it is available online through the WEMSA Learning Portal for anytime access.

What You’ll Learn:
      • EMS scene safety procedures

      • How to use the Emergency Response Guidebook

      • How to use the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards

      • Railway incident command coordination

      • Triage, patient care, and decontamination standards
