December's topic is Ice Rescue Operations for the EMS Responder through with John Kiser.
Course Description: Emergency Medical Services are often the first to arrive at the scene of an ice rescue, knowing what should and should not be done by initial responders can be the difference between rescue and recovery. Identify the hazards associated with ice, equipment options, scene management, and the operational risk benefit analysis are key concepts that will be identified in this session to help train and draft policy for this low frequency/high risk event. While there are protocols for managing the victims, this program will also discuss patient care of the rescuer(s) who deploy into icy waters.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and describe types and formations of ice. (NFPA 1006: 20.2.2)
- Identify and describe victim considerations common to ice rescue. (NFPA 1006: 20.2.2, 20.2.4, 20.2.5)
- Identify and describe tools and equipment used in ice rescue. (NFPA 1006: 20.2.1, 20.2.4, 20.2.5)
