April's topic is Addressing Falls Through Coordinated Collaboration with Emergency Medical Services with Suzanne Morley. Suzanne Morley, CHES, brings passion and purpose to her role as a Health Promotion Program Coordinator at the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging (WIHA), where she focuses on two main areas: boosting social connection and preventing falls. A graduate of UW-Stevens Point with a degree in Health Promotion/Wellness, Suzanne has always been driven to make a difference in community health and prevention. Before joining WIHA, she channeled her energy into suicide prevention and governmental public health, gaining valuable experience and insight into the many ways we can build and grow healthier, more connected communities. When she’s not working, Suzanne recharges by staying active—yoga, biking, and hiking are her go-to favorites—and spending quality time with her husband, son, and their energetic black lab.

Course Description:  Older adult falls are the leading cause of injury and death for older adults. This presentation highlights how a statewide organization coordinated the development of an innovative toolkit designed for and by EMS and community-based organizations that outlines opportunities for collaboration and steps to implement identified strategies (assessment/referral tools, evidence-based programs, community support resources, and more) to prevent falls. Attendees will learn how preventing falls can save time, money, and resources and the collaborative development process of the toolkit, key lessons learned, and how to integrate the toolkit to improve fall prevention efforts and community health outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how one statewide organization coordinated efforts for local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and community-based organizations (CBOs) to collaborate on falls prevention efforts.
  2. Explain the development and use of a toolkit for EMS and CBOs to identify and implement a falls prevention effort locally.
  3. Compare identified opportunities for falls prevention collaboration between EMS and CBOs outlined in the toolkit.
  4. Connect attendees with a statewide effort to address older adult falls prevention.

Target Audience: All First Responders
