Course Description: This course provides a step-by-step guide to developing and implementing a prehospital blood administration program within a ground-based EMS agency. Participants will explore the clinical need for blood on 911 responses, the operational and legal challenges of launching such a program, and the essential logistics required to support it, from dispatch data to blood storage and warming equipment. Emphasis will be placed on collaboration with blood banks, training requirements, cost considerations, and building quality improvement infrastructure to ensure long-term success.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify appropriate clinical and dispatch criteria for initiating prehospital blood transfusion protocols.

  • Describe the operational, legal, and logistical components required to establish a blood program for EMS.

  • Outline the steps for partnering with blood banks and securing necessary equipment and training.

  • Evaluate the importance of quality assurance, cost planning, and re-evaluation in sustaining a blood administration program.

  • Recognize the role of multidisciplinary collaboration and adaptability in overcoming implementation barriers.
